Jennerstown Speedway Complex

Jennerstown Speedway Complex is a beautiful facility with plenty of  parking. 90racing is headquartered near Pittsburgh, PA, so we consider Jennerstown one of our home tracks.  With a rich history dating back to its opening in 1922, this track has almost as much history as USAC.  The complex features a half-mile asphalt oval track that provides the perfect setting for high-speed racing.

USAC Silver Crown

USAC Silver Crown cars look similar to sprint cars, but are different in many ways.  They are roughly 200 pounds heavier than a sprint car, have a longer wheel base and carry a much larger fuel cell. The fuel cell on a Silver Crown car holds 75-80 gallons of methanol, so their range is 100+ miles without the need for a fuel stop.  Plus, each driver must factor in the fuel load at the start of the race to the finish, so strategy is important. The balance of the car will change dramatically throughout the race as it burns the extra weight of up to 500 pounds of methanol to very little at the finish.

The other difference is that Silver Crown cars must start the race under their own power.  If any car requires a push start, the rules dictate that it start must start at the rear of the field. The engines are started by crew using a hand held starter. For fans, it is exciting to hear the command "Start Your Engines!" at the beginning of each 100 mile race!  Once the engine is running, crew will hand push the cars to give them enough momentum to get the car in gear.

Starting #90 Silver Crown car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The USAC Silver Crown series has captivated race fans for decades. These powerful machines date back to the Indy 500. In the 1960's, Indy car design went to low-slung, mid-engine cars derived from Formula One technology of that time, so in 1971 USAC designated a separate championship (Silver Crown today) for the descendants of the classic upright, front-engine, tube-frame beasts that had dominated Indy car competition for decades.
